Silverstream School in Mosgiel, are one of our newer schools who joined the KickStart Breakfast whānau in term three 2018. Principal Greg Hurley shares how the KickStart Breakfast programme has become part of Silverstream’s culture and values.

“We have a real sense of aroha and community at our school so offering a chance for our children, staff and parents to pop in for a nibble, cuppa and a chat is invaluable. We have several parents who encourage their children to come for a second breakfast (or alternative breakfast) to support us in making the hungry/disadvantaged children invisible. No one knows who hasn't had breakfast or what their motivation is to be at our KickStart breakfast. Staff members join in regularly to connect and chat and the kids LOVE this too. Mrs Gray runs a great programme and sometimes brings in special treats like fruit bread or milo as a surprise addition to our KickStart Breakfast menu.

The children that need this support are far more alert, active and happier than they were prior. We believe they display a stronger sense of belonging too which is crucial to their learning and engagement. They know they are safe, secure and cared for. They are part of a special team and this contributes substantially to the pride and mana in our community.

Kia kaha KickStart!
