Rise and Shine: Breakfast Club at Napier Girl's High School

At Napier Girl's High School, mornings have become a time of connection, comfort, and kai thanks to a fresh take on the traditional Breakfast Club. What started as a challenge—finding the staff and space to run a consistent breakfast programme—has turned into a heartwarming success story.
A Café with a Cause
To help support school operations, the team launched an on-site café that opens before the school day begins. It serves up barista-made hot drinks and freshly baked treats, creating a warm and welcoming space for students. And tucked into this cozy corner? The KickStart Breakfast Club—offering free, nutritious meals to anyone who wants or needs them.
The café and Breakfast Club are run by the school’s canteen staff, who bring energy, care, and culinary skills to the table every morning from 8:00 to 8:30 AM. They’re the friendly faces behind the kai, making sure every student starts their day right.

More Than Just a Meal
The best part? Breakfast is now a consistent offering. Students know they can count on a good meal to fuel their day, and that reliability makes a big difference—especially for those who might otherwise go without. Food safety and quality are top priorities. Breakfast supplies are managed as part of the school’s kitchen control plan, ensuring everything is fresh, properly stored, and ready to serve.
Promotion hasn’t been necessary. The café’s inviting atmosphere naturally draws students in. It’s a space where they can grab a bite, chat with staff, and ease into the day with a sense of belonging. Students are encouraged to bring their friends along, and that simple invitation has helped the Breakfast Club grow steadily. It’s a ripple effect of kindness and community.
Year 12 student Leilani Brown says: Weet-Bix fuels my morning! Every day before school, Weet-Bix gives me the energy to start strong. It’s quick, filling, and keeps me going through classes, sports, and everything in between. It’s my go-to breakfast that helps me feel ready for whatever the day throws at me!
By integrating the Breakfast Club into the café experience and offering meals at no cost, the school has created a space that feels inclusive and stigma-free. It’s not about “free food”—it’s about dignity, choice, and starting the day with a smile.
