Ngata Memorial College: Nurturing Community Through KickStart Breakfast
Tucked away on the East Coast, about two hours north of Gisborne, Ngata Memorial College is more than just a school—it’s a hub of learning and connection for the Ruatoria community. It’s a composite school, which means it welcomes students from Year 1 all the way through to Year 13, bringing together kids of all ages and backgrounds under one roof. But what really brings everyone together each morning is something special: the KickStart Breakfast programme.
Every day at 8:30, students pour into the school hall. It’s become a bit of a tradition—everyone gathers in their year groups, and either the principal, Mr. Heron, or a staff member gives a quick update and leads a karakia (prayer). Then the real magic happens: the sound of spoons clinking in bowls, toast crunching, and conversations buzzing fills the room.

There’s a great spread of food available, and everyone has about fifteen minutes to eat, chat, and ease into the day before heading off to class at 8:45. But this isn’t just about breakfast—it’s about starting the day together, in a calm and caring space where everyone feels like they belong.
Peter Heron, who’s been principal since 2020, puts it perfectly: “A shared breakfast means that we start the day as a family rather than a business.”
The idea behind the breakfast club comes from a place of empathy and community spirit. For some families, it’s a big help financially. For others—especially students who travel long distances by bus—it’s a chance to fuel up and settle in before the school day begins.
One of the best parts? The casual chats. Teachers and students get to connect in a relaxed way—talking about their mornings, what they’re into, or what’s coming up. These little moments help build trust and stronger relationships, which ripple out into the rest of the school day.
And the impact is real. Teachers have noticed that students who come to breakfast are more focused and ready to learn. A full tummy and a calm start can make all the difference in the classroom.
At the end of the day, KickStart Breakfast is about more than just food. It’s about whānau, community, and aroha. It’s a daily reminder that learning isn’t just about books—it’s also about feeling seen, supported, and part of something bigger.
